The Sereer: Desperately Trying to Please God

The Sereer tribe of Senegal, West Africa has a heart of giving to the needy, praying reverently, fasting and a genuine desire to please God. But because they are in an area that is historically immersed in the traditions of Voodoo and is dominated by modern Islam, the very sad fact is that very few people have heard the truth about Jesus. The documentary, The Sereer: Desperately Trying to Please God, follows a group of Christian missionaries who explore the culture, lifestyle and belief system of the Sereer tribe as they share the truth of the gospel.

Since 2004, the people of Rocky Creek Baptist Church in Greenville, SC have committed themselves to investing in the lives of the Sereer people. The church regular sends small groups of believers to share the truth of the gospel in the remote villages of the Sereer tribe.

It is equally important, however, that the missionaries demonstrate the love of Christ, as well. Through selfless acts of feet washing, performing daily work responsibilities, doing health examinations and even joining families for dinner, the people of Rocky Creek Baptist Church have built genuine and trusting relationships and have become like family to the Sereer villages. Such trust opens the opportunity for non-judgmental discussions that introduce the truth about Jesus Christ into the hearts of people who have practiced other religions for all their life.

It is deeply ingrained in Sereer culture to avoid conflict and be respectful of other people’s beliefs. But there is an obvious deeper connection as the Sereer people truly believe that even though they may believe different things, they feel as though they are on same path to the same God. They truly believe that they can get to the Father without Jesus Christ. They commit to living a religious life pleasing to God but disregard the need of a relationship with Jesus. The truth remains, however – Jesus is “…the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:16)

The Sereer captures life transforming moments of salvation as the truth of God’s word is sown into the hearts of the Sereer people.

Café Diego

“Café Diego: The Cost of a Dream” is a documentary that follows the life of a Nicaraguan coffee farmer named Diego Chavarria. It is a story of great hardship, faith, risk, poverty and perseverance. It is a story about being faithful with what we have and believing God has a dream that is bigger than our own.

After living in Canada for almost 10 years, the Lord spoke to Diego Chavarria and instructed him to return to his country. In an act of obedience, Diego risked it all. Having nothing to lean on but those simple instructions, he moved his entire family from Canada to his homeland in Nicaragua.

The coffee farmer had no idea, however, that he’d be returning to an economy that was in the midst of a coffee crisis. There was no hope for a coffee farmer like Diego at the time he moved back to Nicaragua. A farmer’s costs are always the same no matter what the market value is. He was forced to start selling his family’s belongings and take out loans just to maintain his family’s wellbeing. After seven years of struggle, Diego had not only lost his farm but was up to $1.5 million in debt.

He had no idea that God was brewing a harvest that would change everything. After years of oppression and questioning God’s plan, Diego received a series of miraculous breakthroughs in the most unexpected places … breakthroughs that continue to impact people not only from his local village, but across the world as well.

“Café Diego: The Cost of a Dream” is a true story about the blessings in store for those who continue to follow the vision that God has given them … no matter the cost.

“I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.”

The Frank Jenner Question

Meet Frank Jenner, a simple man with a profound question. It was 1941 at the height of WWII when Frank heard God call him to approach 10 people per day on the streets of Sydney Australia and politely ask one simple question: “If you died within 24 hours where would your soul be in eternity, Heaven or Hell?” The possibility of imminent death would not have seemed a remote one to the many soldiers and sailors who passed through Sydney harbor on their way to and from battle assignments and it was to members of the military that Frank
was most drawn.

This documentary examines how Jenner’s straightforward and bold outreach led to the conversion of many and influenced evangelism methods for decades to come. What emerges is a portrait of a sincere and earnest man with a pure desire to reach those around him with the message that had changed his life.

The lesson of the film is not necessarily to copy Jenner’s approach but to listen and obey God’s call to proclaim the gospel in the context in which we live.

Two Hats

In 1998, Brad and Deborah Wells forfeited the comfort of their Idaho home to fulfill a call from God to spread His Word in Mount Hagen, the third largest city in Papua New Guinea. The documentary Two Hats follows Brad and Deborah, along with their seven children, as they learn how to lead an inspiring life of ministry among people who initially have a difficult time receiving them.

Though ultimately rewarding, ministry in a different country creates a few setbacks and challenges for the Wells family – including deadly threats from non-believers and sorcerers. Because the Wells family is considered wealthy by the people of New Guinea, that in itself creates another barrier of tension. Even traveling from city to city to spread the Word can be dangerous as beggars demand money with threats of violence.

This documentary gives you a first-hand look at the battles Brad and his family face as they adapt and learn to understand the New Guinea culture, realizing it’s a necessary step so that they can make God’s message clear. Persistent and passionate about their call to ministry, they continuously find new ways to use their gifts and talents to reach others and be used by God. For example, when the roads aren’t accessible, an aviation ministry allows the Wells family to fly into remote areas to speak the Word of God to villages of people for days at a time.

In hopes of reaching areas where they still lack physical presence, Brad establishes the country’s first Christian radio station that, today, reaches about 50,000 listeners. Yet still, a life-threatening moment teaches Brad a valuable lesson – he’s not as accepted by the Papua New Guinea people as he thinks.

Two Hats follows the life of a sincere man of God who learns how to wear the hat of those around him to establish a genuine connection of trust and tear down tense barriers so that he may effectively minister to them.

How do you help children who don’t have families? A young film team comes together for a 22 nation journey in hopes of finding the answer to this question. For two years, the team, on a small budget from crowdfunding and donations, had over 70 interviews with social workers, advocates, doctors, and authors to find ways to end the global orphan crisis.

Knowing that almost 10 million children live in orphanages and 100 million are homeless, the team knew there was a necessary demand to restore families across the globe. The biggest question was HOW?

Along their inspiring journey, the team met three kids who forever changed their lives and perspective of the global orphan crisis. Caught in street life, orphanage care, and abandonment, these three children face traumatic challenges daily. But through witnessing the harsh realities of their everyday living, the team learns there is a need greater than money. They become inspired to create a powerful family-based model that can change the way the world approaches orphan care. Their model goes beyond the material needs of food, blankets, school supplies, and clothing and allows orphans to feel the genuine, unconditional love only felt in a loving family setting.

The team learns that the greater need is to push past the physical needs of abandoned youth and provide an emotional attachment of love and acceptance for them – helping them realize they are not alone in this world.

The full-length feature documentary Lost Kites follows the journey of finding hope for these three young kids and the millions beyond them.

Earth has no sorrow that Heaven cannot heal. Even amid life’s greatest heartbreak, God is able to provide hope and healing.

Gentry and Hadley Eddings are a beautiful family who shares their love for Christ. They are madly in love and have served for years as worship leaders in their church. After several years of being married, their first son Dobbs, joyfully entered their life. Dobbs was commonly known and appreciated for his extra-special laugh and was nicknamed “the joy baby.”

Before Dobbs turned two, the family received the good news that another “joy baby” was on the way!

When Hadley was approximately 36 weeks into the pregnancy, she, Gentry, and Dobbs traveled to the North Carolina coast to attend a family wedding. In the midst of the stresses prior to the wedding, Dobbs reminded his parents of a Bible verse that he had just learned: “Be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10).

From Earth … to Heaven

Gentry and Hadley describe the wedding as an absolute “heavenly” experience. While still basking in the afterglow of the wedding as they drove home, Hadley turned and reminded Dobbs, “I love you, buddy.” It never crossed her mind that this would be the last time she would ever be able to tell him she loved him on this side of Heaven.
