Come Before Winter

Daily, at a secret location outside of London, a beautifully voiced Jewish refugee opens her microphone on the most powerful radio transmitter in the world for a broadcast of World War II news reports that are purposefully intertwined with some carefully concocted lies into the radios of German-occupied Europe. The man leading the popular British “Black Propaganda” radio station is phenomenal propagandist Sefton Delmer – the first man to interview Adolf Hitler in 1932. He has one goal and that’s to turn Germans against Nazis by carefully spreading confusion and trickery. Through this, he discovers an astonishing truth – that there are Germans inside of Germany who want to destroy Hitler and the Nazi regime, as well.

The docudrama Come Before Winter follows the life of propagandist Sefton Delmer, along with another longtime foe of Adolf Hitler, German pastor and Nazi resister Dietrich Bonhoeffer.

For years, Minnesota psychiatrist Gary Blout and German filmmaker Hellmut Schilgenslepen have admired the work of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. By collaborating with California director and film editor Kevin Ekvall (I’m Not Leaving, 2014), they created the docudrama Come Before Winter to tell the story of the last days of anti-Nazi dissident Dietrich Bonhoeffer through the eyes of Sefton Delmer’s British “Black Propaganda” radio broadcast team.

Revealing the cruel ironies of the last weeks of World War II in Europe, the docudrama was filmed on the Baltic island of Rugen, in Berlin, Buchenwald, Flossenburg and various locations throughout England and the United States. It’s a true view of the Third Reich that includes uncertainty, wartime cruelty and vengeance.
