Two men, 100 years apart, are united by the powerful hymn “Amazing Grace.” After escaping a cruel slave owner, Samuel Woodward (Cuba Gooding Jr.) is forced to decide between revenge or freedom. One-hundred years earlier in 1748, the fate of slave ship Captain John Newton (Bernard Forcher) rests in the hands of Samuel’s great-grandfather. The voyage changes Newton’s life forever and creates a legacy that will inspire Samuel and generations to come.
Based on the true story of a family of runaway slaves in the 1850s who endured torture and death to gain their freedom, it shows how that very inhumane institution of slavery inspired Newton to pen one of the most famous and beloved songs of all time. Samuel, his wife Vanessa (Sharon Leal) and children embark on a perilous journey to Canada using the Underground Railroad. The vicious slave owner calls in notorious slave hunter Plimpton (William Sadler) to bring them back alive. Hunted like a dog and haunted by unimaginable hardship, Samuel cannot bring himself to forgive his captor. His mother informs him, “One day, you will sing ‘Amazing Grace’” and begins to retell the story of the song’s composer, John Newton.
A hundred years earlier, Newton, the captain of a slave trader ship, sails from Africa to America carrying a cargo of slaves. On board the ship is Samuel’s great-grandfather, whose survival is tied to the fate of Captain Newton. During the rough passage, Newton’s eye are opened to the cruelties of the slave trade. He rediscovers the power of God and writes the song that would prove to be his most lasting legacy.
